Google kopiert Xiaomis 10 Jahre alte Sicherheitsfunktion in Android 17

The official release of the next major Android version is still months away, but leaks are already painting a clear picture. Recent reports, originating from an internal OEM AOSP build, suggest that Google is finally focusing on privacy and visual refinement.

The biggest highlight? A native app lock feature is finally being introduced to stock Android. While this is groundbreaking for Pixel users, those of us familiar with the Xiaomi HyperOS ecosystem might experience a sense of déjà vu. Here’s what we know about Android 17 so far.

TL;DR

  • App Lock finally comes natively in Android 17, allowing users to restrict access to specific apps directly through the launcher.
  • The screen recording feature receives a redesigned user interface, bringing tablet-like controls to smartphone screens.
  • Visual changes include new transparent volume bars that mimic a „liquid glass look“.
  • Xiaomi users have been enjoying similar features for over 10 years and can therefore say that they were ahead of their time.

Native App Lock: Better late than never?

Android users have long relied on third-party apps to lock their sensitive applications. However, it appears that Android 17 will bring a much-needed feature to Android devices.

From the leaks we’ve seen so far, it appears there will be a new option in the context menu. If you long-press an application icon, the „Lock app“ option will appear in the context menu. This option allows you to lock your application with your fingerprint or PIN code.

I find it interesting how Google highlighted this feature in Android 17. As a long-time Xiaomi user , I can say that I’ve been enjoying this feature for a long time. App Lock has been an integral part of the program since the introduction of MIUI .

How will it work?

From the screenshots we have seen so far, it appears that the feature will work as follows: Once you have locked an application, a message will appear on the lock screen.

We also saw some code hints suggesting that notification content is not displayed when an application is locked. This feature ensures that sensitive content does not appear in the status bar.

The Xiaomi advantage

While it’s always good when these features are integrated into the Android OS, we’re already miles ahead with our security app on Xiaomi HyperOS . So, if you’re already a proud Xiaomi device owner, you don’t have to wait any longer for the Android 17 rollout.

What’s next?

It’s too early to say exactly which features will be included in the Android 17 rollout. The features are currently being tested internally. However, one thing is certain: Google is focusing on user privacy and appearance. We’ll continue to examine the code to find out what other „borrowed“ features will be introduced with the rollout.
